Installation Tips for Do It Yourself Shade Sails

Shade Sail Installation Tips: (Printable Version)

Choose a Location.
Use a string attached to the intended anchor points to show the location of the shade sail and where it will project shade.  Keep in mind that the actual shade sail will not have the straight lines of the string.  Shade Sails are designed with a curve that deflects about 10% over the length of each edge.

Be sure to allow enough room between each corner of the Shade Sail and each Anchor Point where a tensioning device will be used.  At least 2 corners must be attached with a tensioning device.

Tip:  Your shade sail will be more aesthetically pleasing when the anchor points are at different heights.

Ensure that the Anchor Points are Structurally Sound.  Once you decide on the placement of your sails, it is important to to ensure that the anchor points will support the loads placed on the shade sail.
  • Posts
    • Be sure to call Blue Stake to locate underground utilities before digging.
    • Our pole kit makes an excellent temporary anchor point.  See the hardware page for more details.
    • If permanent posts are desired, we recommend 4” diameter galvanized steel.  The concrete footings for these posts should be 24” in diameter and 48” deep.  The posts should be embedded 24” into the concrete.
  • Anchoring to a Structure
    • The anchor point on a building must be structurally sound.  If you are unsure about any of the anchor points, get advice from a builder or engineer.
    • Fascia should be reinforced before being used as an anchor point.
    • If a solid anchor point is not available close to the corner of your sail, you can use rope or a wire to span the distance to a suitable anchor point.
  • Anchoring to a Tree
    • We recommend attaching to a tree only temporarily

Tip:  Ensure that each Anchor Point faces the center of the Shade Sail.  This helps prevent sagging and creases.

Cleaning. Use a mild detergent and warm water, applied with a soft brush or sponge.  Rinse with clean water.  Caution; Chlorine and other Chemicals can cause a premature breakdown of the fabric.
